Tanzanite

TANZANITE is a blue to violet-blue gemstone with unique physical and metaphysical properties. It’s known for its strong trichroism, meaning it appears different colors (blue, violet, and burgundy) depending on the crystal orientation. Beyond its beauty, tanzanite is believed to have healing, spiritual, and protective qualities, as well as uses in jewelry and other applications.
Physical Properties:
Color: Ranges from violet-blue to deep blue.
Hardness: 6-7 on the Mohs scale, suitable for jewelry but requires care to avoid hard impact.
Trichroism: Appears different colors in different directions.
Other: Transparent to translucent.
Healing Properties:
Boosts Immunity: Some believe tanzanite can strengthen the immune system.
Skin and Hair: May enhance skin regeneration and improve skin tone, texture, and health. It is also said to help with hair fall and other hair-related issues.
Pain Relief: Some believe it can alleviate pain and ease inflammation.
Respiratory Support: May help with conditions like asthma, bronchitis, and shortness of breath

Tanzanite mining in Tanzania primarily occurs in the Mererani Hills, a narrow strip of land in the Manyara Region near Mount Kilimanjaro. This is the only known location for tanzanite, and the mining area is divided into four blocks, A, B, C, and D. Large-scale mining operations are primarily in Blocks A and C, while artisanal mining is common in Blocks B and D.
Key aspects of Tanzanite mining in Tanzania:
Location:
The Mererani Hills, specifically a 2 km wide by 4 km long area.
Mining Blocks:
The area is divided into four blocks, with large-scale mining in Blocks A and C, and small-scale/artisanal mining in Blocks B and D.
Historical Context:
The Tanzanian government nationalized the mines in 1971, and the area was later demarcated into blocks in 1990.

Major Players:
Tanzania Gemstone Industries (TGI) and TanzaniteOne Mining are among the largest operators.
Mining Techniques:
Large-scale operations use mechanized methods, while artisanal miners use non-mechanized techniques.
Production and Reserves:
Tanzania produces a significant amount of tanzanite annually, and the country’s reserves are estimated to be substantial.
Challenges:
Issues like smuggling, environmental impacts, and the need for sustainable mining practices are ongoing concerns.
Social Impact:
Tanzanite mining supports a large number of people in the region, but there are also challenges related to social and economic development
